Chateau Saint-Jean Chateauneuf du Pape 2007
The vineyard is located in the heart of Chateauneuf du Pape, on the slopes above the village of Courthézon. This renowned area is called “Valori”. The soil at Valori was formed by the Rhone river during the era called “Pliocène” (- 2 000 000 years).
His composition is typical with round pebbles mixed with clay elements in subsoil. Thanks to this clay’s presence vines don’t suffer too much of dryness during the summer.
Since few years some chalky soils with white stones complete our vineyard. This new “terroir” is situated on a 120m high slope above the Rhone river and the village of Châteauneuf du Pape.
The vines are on average 40 years old and yields are never more than 27 hl/hectare.
The blend is made during the winter with different percentages of each grape variety :
80% of Grenache, 10% of Syrah and 10% of Mourvèdre.
This blend gives a strong and complex wine with little black fruits and cacao’s bouquet. With time the oxidative nature of Grenache grape variety will reveal aromas of prune. “Château St Jean” can age up to 10 years minimum.
It works perfectly well with red meat and ground-game as roebuck or wild boar with pears which will exalt its complexity and its richness. It must be served at room-temperature : 18°c
