It is typical of wines from this area, called “Plan de Dieu” : a powerful style with a very clear xpression of Grenache.
“Château ST JEAN” accompanies perfectly red meat and “Pot-au-feu” (boiled beef) which will reinforce leather taste. It will combine with different cheese in mutual benefit, e.g. so called "Bergkäse" from the Alps and traditional goat’s cheeses.
Chateau St Jean vineyard is located in the township of Travaillan, north-east of the town of Orange and stretches out over the Plan de Dieu plateau where vineyards were growned as early as the 13th century. The estate belonged to the Lord of Serignan until the French Revolution. The domain’s name is mentioned for the first time in 1666.
“Plan de Dieu” is a large terrace, at 110 m. high, formed by old alluvial deposit during the geologic era called Riss (- 500 000 years). Further these origins round pebbles are presents in a great density, from 60% in surface until 80% in deeps horizons. It results a decreased reserve of water and little yields per hectares. The vines are on average 30 years old and yields are never more than 40 hl/hectare. It’s the way imposed by this difficult but powerful “Terroir” if we want to obtain his real expression.
Established in Gigondas, home of the MEFFRE family, where he is the owner of Chateau Raspail, Christian MEFFRE presents his other estates located in the areas with the following appellations Côtes du Rhône, Côtes du Rhône Villages and Châteauneuf du Pape.
